How to Replace the Battery on an iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, and iPhone 5s

 

Apple has stated that the way their batteries are designed, they will continue to retain a minimum of 80% of their original capacity after recharging it 500 times. What this means is, after charging it hundreds of times, it won’t hold as much charge as it did when it was new. If you find that your battery is draining quickly and it won’t last you the average day, it’s likely time to replace it with a new one. Here we are going to explain how to go about changing the battery yourself, rather than spending money on the Apple battery replacement. Everybody loves to save money.

 

Although the iPhone may appear to be tough to open, it actually only has a few screws in order to remove the battery. If you can operate a screwdriver, it’s about a ten minute job. You can purchase the Apple battery replacements on our eBay store fairly cheap. When ordering the battery, you want to ensure that the model number is correct, below is a list of iPhones and their battery part numbers:

 

  • iPhone 5: 616-0610, 616-0611, 616-0613, 616-0579
  • iPhone 5S: 616-0718, 616-0719, 616-0721, 616-0728
  • iPhone 5C: 616-0667, 616-0721, 616-8300

 

In addition to the battery, you will need the following tools:

 

  • Standard Philips size 00
  • Pentalobe screwdriver
  • pry tool
  • Suction cup

 

The only special tool required is the screwdriver which is used for removing the proprietary Pentalobe screws that are located at the bottom of the iPhone. You can get  these in tool kits sold for this purpose, however buying a battery with the tool kit already with it could be less expensive.

1.) Turn off the phone – Hold the power button down and slide the button on the screen to the right.

slide-to-power-off-2902.) Use the Pentalobe Screwdriver to take out two screws located on the bottom of the iPhone, place screws somewhere safe.

3.) Use the suction cup to apply a strong, but not quick pressure right above or on the sides of the home button. This allows you to create a small gap, but big enough to get your pry tool in and begin prying the screen open. Note: If you’re replacing the battery on an iPhone 5S, take extra caution at this point as the TouchID cable is connected near the bottom of the phone and it can be easy to damage by prying the screen up too much.

4.) Using the pry tool, begin making your way from bottom up the side, do this on each side to release the clips which releases the screen.

5.) It is possible to switch out the battery without having to disconnect the screen, but if you must, be careful. You will have to hold the screen at a 90 degree slant during the whole process. If removing the screen is preferred, use the Philips screwdriver to remove the metal plate from the cable. From here you can continue to pry the screen off.

6.) Now you want to remove the two screws that are holding the battery connections to the motherboard. This is where each model is a bit different, but the main position remains the same as on the iPhone 5 pictured here. If the metal plate gets stuck to the battery, it is simple to pry off.

7.) Attempt to release the battery by pulling on the plastic battery tab, it’s common for this alone not to work as the glue is some strong stuff. This is when the consistent pressure is important as you may hear the battery slowly becoming unstuck. A good method is using the pry tool to carefully leverage against the motherboard. Note: don’t apply to much pressure or you could damage the motherboard.

8.) Now that you have the battery out, you may begin aligning the new one, but be careful to ensure the cable connector is positioned correctly, and lined up on the motherboard. Apply gentle pressure to get the battery in place the metal plate and replace the screws to make sure it’s secure.

 9.) If you had decided to remove the whole screen, make sure to reconnect the cables so they click back in place, then continue to put the metal plate back.

10.) You should now be able to hook the top of the screen into the iPhone’s body. Ensure that it’s not sticking out more than half a millimeter, if it does then you haven’t replaced it correctly. To correct this, gently apply pressure from the top of the screen down, you should notice the clips click into place and you shouldn’t have any resistance as you replace the two Pentalobe screws.

11.) If you go to turn the phone on and nothing happens, don’t stress out. The battery was probably fully discharged as a safety precaution. Simply put your iPhone on the charger.

If your iPhone reboots constantly after the replacement, you need to do a “Hard Reset” by holding down the Home and Sleep Button simultaneously for about 10 seconds (until the device restarts).

If you have WiFi and/or Cellular connection problems with the new battery, try restoring the device using iTunes.

Fake Samsung Batteries

The online market is flooded with Sellers that are selling fake counterfeit Samsung batteries. When you purchase a Samsung battery online, your chances of receiving a counterfeit battery are far greater than receiving an Original battery. The quality of a counterfeit battery is very poor compared to an Original. These batteries can also damage your phone. The over charge protection circuits in the counterfeit batteries often fail which leads to overcharging of the battery which can result in the battery exploding! Greenify Tutorial

This will show you how to use the Greenify app to save your battery life on Android devices. If you don’t know, Greenify will put your other apps into hibernation, it will save your battery life and free up memory on your device.

 

This is how you are able to get more battery life on your Android by using Greenify:

1.) Download and then install the Greenify app from the GooglePlay Store.

2.) Open up Greenify once its installed, and the select apps to put in hibernation.

3.) Simply tap “+” to add your apps that you want in hibernation.

4.) Scroll down and then select “Show More Apps”, and then select all apps to go into hibernation.

5.) Press and hold the app. Once you have the app highlighted, then select the other apps. Once you have selected all the apps, simply click the mark icon to place these apps into hibernation.

6.) Trigger the Manual Hibernation for all Pending Apps.

7.) You should now be able to see a short list of apps that are pending for manual hibernation. Select these apps and then click the “Zzz” to begin hibernation. Simply wait for a few seconds and the process will be complete.

 

That is all you need to do. All of your apps are now in hibernation mode. This app will remain asleep until you manually launch it. Greenify will prevent these apps from draining your battery, memory bloating, and auto-restarting the apps from preventing your Android from its best performance. Samsung Battery Drain Solutions

Are you having trouble with keeping your Samsung battery charged? If so, don’t worry you are not alone as this is a very common issue with Samsung Galaxy batteries. We are going to go over some solutions that may fix this.

 

 Solution 1: Using Apps

 

The first solution you should give a try is installing Greenify, an app that could increase the battery life. What it does is hibernate all of your apps, and they activate only when you are using them yourself. It will check the inactive time and when it hits a certain amount of inactivity, it puts the app to sleep. This will help increase the battery life on any Samsung Galaxy.

 Solution 2: Change Settings to Extend Your Battery

 

 If you use the auto brightness feature, then the first step to take is turning this off and setting the brightness at a lower level than the max, but not so dim you can’t see the screen. This is a simple method, but very effective when it comes to extending battery life.

 

 Solution 3:  GPS Location

 

 If you haven’t already, try to limit or fully disable the GPS feature. Samsung batteries will end up going dead much quicker if you have the GPS enabled. This is because there is more than just Google that is using the data to track your current location, such as on Facebook.

 

 To limit the GPS tracking on a Galaxy, do the following:

 

 Navigate to Settings > Location> Mode, From here you will find three more options to choose from:

 

 High Accuracy: This uses the GPS, the Wi-Fi and even the network in order to figure out your current location. This can really drain the battery.

 

 Device Only: This uses the on-board GPS.

 

 Battery Saving: This mode helps reduce the drainage to the battery.

 

 If GPS location isn’t needed, you can also simply turn the feature off. Select the mode based on your situation. There may be times you don’t need it on, and other times when you’re out for a run and turn it on just in case something happens.

 

 Solution 4: Sync settings

 

 Are you connected to apps like Facebook and others that feature push notifications? By disabling the sync feature you will be able to increase your battery life by reducing the amount of unwanted notifications.

 

 If some of the push notifications are important, there is a way to choose which ones you can still get.

 

 Solution 5: Check your Battery Settings

 

 At this point you have reduced the brightness, saved by disabling the GPS box and others, now it’s time to review the stats in the battery settings. This will give you a list of the things which have taken up the battery life. There are many things you can try in order to increase the battery life.

 

 To see what could be draining your battery the most, go to Settings > Devices > Battery. From here, you will be able to view the top reasons for battery usage. To improve the battery usage for each app, simply tap on the three dots, then choose how you prefer it to be adjusted. You can choose to never activate, or when the battery is at 5% or 15%. Doing this will help reduce your overall battery usage.

 

 The above solutions can be customized to fit your personal needs. None of them are required to operate the basic features, only you know which settings you can do without to extend your battery. The Greenify app can greatly increase the battery life on it’s own, so the other solutions are just to help get every drop of power out when needed.

 

 Hopefully you were able to improve your Samsung Galaxy’s battery life by using some of these solutions. This will allow you to get the longest life you can from your battery without having to constantly worry about the phone dying.

Prolong the Life of your Battery

You have had your phone for months now and you begin to notice that your battery isn’t really holding up like it used to when it was brand new. The battery begins to die by 2 in the afternoon. So, you begin to wonder what is going on with your phone. Is this the bad reviews about the battery life that you heard about? Maybe it was the upgrade that happened to the phone a month ago.

 

It isn’t either one of those. If you are like most, then you probably had your phone set up in the store, and then took it home to begin using it. When your phone said to charge the battery, you plugged your phone in and when it was charged, you would begin using it again. You were just waiting for that message that stated low battery so you can charge it.

 

When it comes to most phones, this is the message that pops up around 10% charge. Completely discharging a lithium battery this far will actually give you a battery life of around 300-500 charges, but it will actually begin to lose capacity way before that. You will actually begin to notice after around 150 charges that your battery just isn’t staying as charged as it was. Even if it is just a 5% capacity loss, it could be forecasting what’s coming. Once a year is up, you honestly begin to believe the stories about your phone type damaging the batteries.

 

The truth is that your battery could have been on a shelf at a manufacturer plant for months after it was made, which puts the charge at about 40%. Once it went to the manufacturer for the phone, it was at 35%, so they charge the battery, and brought it to 45%. They made sure that the battery worked for the phone and then they turned it off and packed it up. It sat around for another few months before you actually bought your phone. 40% is the right charging level for long-term storage, and both of the manufacturers know this, so your battery should be fine. A lithium battery will discharge a bit due to the chemical make up of the battery. This is called self-discharge. Many batteries will have this issue which is why you notice that AA’s that you buy at a store have an expiration date. The more charge that is in a battery, the faster the discharge. If the charge becomes too low, then there are chemical changes that happen which will shorten the battery life. 40% is the best point. It is low enough that self-discharge is quite slow, but its high enough not to shorten the life of the battery by too much.

 

Now, you are able to get the battery and begin using it.

 

Usually, you want to charge the phone battery until the phone states that it’s charged, and then another 30 minutes. This is to measure the state of charge of your battery to measure the voltage on the terminals when there is a load on it, such as your phone. This is just an approximation, so if the phone is actually turned off, it is drawing very little current and that isn’t an actual load, so the battery actually seems more charged than what it actually is. Even when it is turned on, which gives a more accurate reading, the charger is pumping more voltage on the terminals of the battery at full charge. It has to, because the current flows due to the difference in voltage. If your battery is at 3.5 volts, and the charger is pushing 3.5 volts, the battery will never charge. The extra voltage is what actually makes the battery charge, and this is what makes the state of charge look better than what it is. The extra 30 minutes is what makes it hit 100% charged.

 

You don’t have to worry about actually overcharging your battery. The charging circuit in your phone will be able to tell when your battery is fully charged. You aren’t able to accurately measure what it is, but if you are able to watch the change in temperature and voltage over time, which is what the charging circuit does, then it can tell when your battery is fully charged. Then it will shut off, even if the charger is still plugged in or if the phone is still on the charging plate, it could indicate that it is still charging, even though it is not. When the charge actually drops, then it will begin charging again.

 

You will normally use your phone until it says to charge it. This is something you shouldn’t do. You should never do this, except during conditioning. Never let your battery go under 40% charge. When you begin to let it drop below 50%, is where your battery life will begin to drop. 40% won’t begin to shorten the life enough to actually matter. Frequently discharging the battery to 20%, your battery is only really about half the battery life and frequently discharging to 5%, it won’t even last a year.  I am still using the batteries that come with my Samsung Galaxy S4. I always carry 2 of them. If the phone drops to 40%, I switch out the batteries that way I have the phone running for a few more hours before I need to charge it. Besides from long-term storage, my batteries have rarely went below 40%.

 

I switch the batteries in my S4 every month. On the first month, I will fully charge the phone and then take out the battery and place the other battery in it. Then the other battery becomes my spare battery. You should never carry a battery in your purse or pocket when the terminals are bare. A 2000mAh lithium battery has enough energy to be able to weld your keys to your leg. If you have to carry it with you place it in a plastic baggy, if you don’t have a plastic case to keep it in. In just one month, your battery will lose around 2% of its charge, if you don’t use it that month. This isn’t considered long-term storage. Just place it in your phone and use it. You will see a 98% charge.

 

Conditioning

 

A new Li-ion battery needs to be conditioned. This process properly initializes the battery so that it holds as full of a charge as possible. It also helps your phone to properly read the percentage of your new battery.

1.) Fully charge the battery for 7 to 8 hours even if your phone claims that the battery is fully charged. A wall outlet is preferred for the initial charge.

2.) Fully discharge the battery ONCE and then repeat step 1.

The only time that you should fully drain the battery is during this conditioning process or if your phone is not properly reading the battery percentage.

 

Temperature

 

You are outside in the cold, in Alberta, Canada. The temperature is negative some number. You’re perfectly fine. 2 pairs of wool socks, thermals, insulated boots, and a 100% down parka. Your phone is in your outside pocket, because in this weather, there is no way you are unzipping your parka to get your phone. The gel electrolyte in your battery is close to being a solid. Your phone rings, so you answer it and your battery that was fully charged when you left the house goes dead in about 5 minutes.

 

Batteries are similar to people when it comes to temperature. They tend to work best at room temperature. When they hit the freezing point, 0 C (32F), they have lost half their capacity. If the battery still worked at -25 C (-13F), a lithium battery stops working at -20 C (-4F), it wouldn’t have any capacity at all. It is only temporary. Simply warm the battery up, that is assuming that the gel didn’t freeze into crystals which damages the battery and it should be good. When you use the phone when it is cold, even just having it turned on, can drastically lower the battery capacity.

 

High temperatures are very bad for your battery. If your phone shows a high temperature warning, then turn it off. If your battery comes out, then take it out of the phone. It is very possible for your lithium battery to go into thermal runaway, which is where it will get hotter than it is able to dissipate the heat, which causes it to get a lot hotter, which makes everything so much worse. If you are lucky, then the battery will burst into flames and you will need to replace the ruined battery. If not, then the pressure inside of the battery will build up and then it explodes. The two places that you don’t want this happening are upwind of you and in your pocket. When a battery explodes it will produce a very irritating smoke, which you don’t want to inhale. This is why it is better to actually purchase a phone that has a removable battery. It is better to see a battery burst into flame than watch a very expensive phone melt. Battery damage isn’t actually covered by your warranty. It is for this reason that I purchased a Samsung phone instead of the iPhone. I am able to change my battery in just a few seconds but it takes around 20 minutes with the right tools to change the battery in an iPhone. The only thing that I need to use to change my phones battery is my fingernail.

 

When it comes to danger, the newer lithium polymer batteries are able to be disposed of safely at a landfill, the harshest chemical is cobalt, and there isn’t much in it, but don’t. There are places that accept batteries for disposal.

 

Now let’s put some myths to rest.

 

Myth 1: Calibration

 

A single conditioning cycle will supposedly calibrate the State of charge. It doesn’t. It has nothing to do with that at all. Calibration actually affects a file, the one that keeps track of which app is using what percentage from the battery. After 10 charges, the file is actually really calibrated. You don’t have to do anything to make it more accurate than it is. You are just wasting your battery and your time.

 

The indication doesn’t look right? That is because its just an approximation. The actual state of charge can only be found by analyzing the chemicals that are in the battery. The battery stores chemical energy, so the state of charge is “what chemicals are present in what percentages” state. Measuring the voltage across the terminals of the battery with a load on it, is the best that we can do. If the reading is off, that’s because your battery isn’t following the standard charge curve -vs- voltage. This is due to the chemicals in the battery. You can’t correct this and if it is important to you, simply replace the battery.

 

Myth 2: Fast Charging or charging from 0% to 100% in minutes.

 

A lithium battery is able to be charged at a 1C rate, the capacity of the battery. If you have a 3200mAh battery, it is able to be charged at 3.2 Amps. The charge from 0%, which should never be done with any lithium battery, to 100% will take an hour plus any inefficiency, turning electrical energy into chemical energy. This means roughly around 90 minutes. The recommended charge is actually 0.75C, so for a 3200mAh battery, the fast charge would be at 2.4 Amps. Many phones are created to charge at around 0.5C. So being able to charge from 50% to 100% at 0.5C is faster than a 1C charge from 0% to 100%, which is around 90 minutes.

 

You can’t make your battery charge any faster by using a bigger charger. Electricity isn’t pushed by design of the charger. It is drawn by the design of the load. If your phone is meant to draw 1.2 Amps, that is what it will draw, as long as the charger is able to give that much. If you connect it to a 100Amp charger, it will still only draw 1.2 amps. Your house is a 100 Amp charger. A 100 watt light bulb actually draws under 1 amp. The only way that you are able to get your phone to draw more current is to raise the voltage that is coming from the charger, and if your lucky all it will do is destroy your phone. If you are not, you will be able to roast marshmallows in the fire.

 

The new fast charge phones have just changed what’s inside of the phone to draw in more current, so instead of a 0.5C charge, they are at 1C charge, which if you are treating the battery right it doesn’t matter what the charge is. The fast charge phones are only saving you just a few minutes.

 

Lastly, the apps that actually saves battery. There are only a few apps that will save any type of battery power and Greenify is one of the best. Apps that optimize or clean RAM on the phone actually tend to use more power than they actually save. I tested plenty of apps and they didn’t actually save power, but cost power. The charge lasted a shorter time running the app than after it was uninstalled.

Power off your iPhone 4S

Turn the phone off – Hold the power button until a red slider shows up, then slide to power down the phone.

Remove the back plate

1.) Use your Pentalobe screwdriver to take out the two screws located on the bottom of the iPhone. Be sure to place them somewhere you won’t lose them.

2.) Apply upward pressure on the back cover, then slide it upwards. It should move approximately 2 mm. If the cover gets stuck, simply use the palm of your hand to apply pressure and try again.

4.) Now lift off the back cover and set it off to the side.

Remove the battery and grounding clip

1.) Remove the 2 screws that is holding the battery connector securely to the motherboard.

2.) These screws are different lengths. Make sure that you remember which screw goes in which hole. The slightly larger screw goes on the bottom.
3.) The iPhone 4 and 4s has a small black ground clip. This clip is attached by the top screw of the battery connector. When reinstalling, make sure to align it so that the gold contact point will press against the back cover.

4.) Using your pry tool, begin carefully lifting up the battery connector.

5.) Insert the edge of a plastic pry tool between the battery and the case near the bottom of the iPhone.

6.) Run the plastic pry tool along the right edge of the battery and pry it upwards at several spots to completely separate it from the adhesive that is securing the battery to the outer case.

7.) Using the clear plastic tab, pull out the battery by lifting up and then out. It may take some force to remove as the battery is glued in, if it doesn’t come out, just apply more force. If you need to, apply slight pressure against the motherboard in order to leverage the battery.

8.) Remove the battery.

You’re ready to add in the new battery, but make sure that the ground clip is correctly positioned before replacing with the new battery. From here you just press the connector back in place, then tighten the 2 screws.

Put the back cover back on, and replace the two pentalobe screws. Then charge the battery before powering on.
